Mount Stanley

Situated on the Rwenzori ranges mount Stanley is the highest mountain of both Uganda and the democratic republic of Congo with an elevation of 5109m (highest peak) third highest in Africa next to Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. Mount Stanley derives its name from a British journalist and explorer sir Henry Morton Stanley who explored it dating back in the exploration and colonial period in the 1880s. it is part of rwenzori national park a UNESCO world heritage site. This magnificent high mountain has several glaciated peaks in context snowing peaks. Mount stanely was first comprehensively trekked in 1906 by Duke of the Abruzzi and party. It has two great summits of magherita 5109m and Alexandra 5091m and other small ones Albert 5,087m, Savoia 4,977m, Ellena 4,968m, Elizabeth 4,929m, Phillip 4,920m Moebius 4,916m, Great Tooth 4,603m

Magherita peak:

Highest peak of the Rwenzori Ranges in uganda east africa and the third highest in Africa (after Mounts Kilimanjaro and Kenya). Margherita Peak is the highest peak on Mount Stanley. It rises to 5,109 m between Lake Albert (Lake Mobutu Sese Seko) to the north and Lake Edward to the south on the Congo (Kinshasa)–Uganda border. It was first climbed in 1906 by an expedition led by Luigi Amedeo Abruzzi and was named for Queen Margherita of Italy.

Mount Baker

Mount Baker is a mountain found in the ranges of rwenzori in Uganda near the border of DR.Congo. Locally the mountain is known as Kiyanja by the Bakonjo the tribe that lives around the rwenzori ranges. Combined with Mount Stanley and Mount Speke, they form a triangle like shape covering the upper Bujuku valley. The mountains make their presence in a hemisphere called The Mountains of the moon. With an altitude of 4844 Mount Baker is the sixth highest mountain in Africa; it has very many peaks like any other mountain of the rwenzori ranges and its highest peak being Edward at a height of 4844m.

This mountain was first trekked by the Austrian mountaineer Rubert Grauer with his two British colleagues H.E Maddox and H.W Tegart in January 1906. However, the highest peak of the mountain, Edward was hiked by the duke of the Abruzzi and his entourage in June the same year.

Mount Speke

It is one of three mountains situated on the rwenzori ranges at the border of Uganda and DR.Congo. it is the second highest mountain amongst the three mountains. It also lies in the mountains of the moon area just like Mount Baker. Its highest peak is Vittorio Emanuele 4890m and its other peaks are Johnston, Ensonga and Trident and the names of the peaks were chosen in honor of the Italian royal family.

The mountain is named after John Speke who climbed it in 1862 while he was trying to find the source of the Nile. However, all the mountains on the rwenzori were climbed extensively by the Duke of Abruzzi in 1906.
